What is the best time to visit Kargil?

April to June is the best time to visit Kargil. This is the summer season in Kargil. The days are warm and you can comfortably move about in the outdoors and go for sightseeing tours. Nights can be cool and the temperatures can range from 8 degrees to 15 degrees Celsius. The most important thing though, is that the roads and national highway are open for tourists. Roads are free of snow and most monuments and tourist attractions are open during summer.

April to June is also the best time to embark on trekking in Kargil. You will find mountain passes in Kargil that remain open for tourists.

Kargil – the gateway to Ladakh

Most of us came to know about Kargil only after the 1999 war with Pakistan. Kargil was the center of the battle between Indian forces and the Pakistan military. The city of Kargil is situated along the LoC (Line of Control) that divides India and Pakistan. It has huge mountain passes, valleys, river streams, glacial lakes, and snowy mountains.

Kargil is also regarded as the gateway to the Leh Ladakh region. Tourists generally make a stopover at Kargil while visiting Leh from Srinagar.

Kargil is a place that has many military memorials, Buddhist shrines, Tibetan monasteries, and museums. It is also the best place for river rafting, trekking, skiing, and discovering the unique Ladakhi cuisine.

Kargil during other seasons

The winter season in Kargil is from December to March and it is the best time to visit Kargil for adventure activities. January is the coldest month in Kargil. Temperatures are generally below freezing point and range from -5 degrees to -20 degrees Celsius. But the best thing about December to February is that you can trek on the frozen Zanskar River and embark on the adventurous Chadar Trek. Snowfall is very common in Kargil during winter.

If you are not an adventurous person and do not love trekking, then do not visit Kargil during the winter season. July and August can be also dangerous for casual tourists. There is a danger of landslides, cloudbursts, and rockfalls.

September till October is also not ideal for visiting Kargil, except for adventure lovers. So we will certainly recommend that you make trip plans from April to June for Kargil.
